A Case Study in Model Management: The US Coast Guard, GAO, TEFA-2, and Structured Modeling with Embedded Languages

چکیده
In this paper we present something of a case or eld study of model management. We begin by listing and discussing a series of commonly-voiced reasons not to use modeling and model management systems. We then summarize the ndings from a GAO (Government Accounting O ce) report on a proposal made by the US Coast Guard. The GAO report was highly critical of the analytic work behind the Coast Guard proposal and this led to its rejection. We then revisit the list of reasons not to use models and model management systems and we nd them largely implausible. Following this, we describe the elements of a prototype model management system, TEFA-2, which is able to store information about models that is su ciently rich to generate Structured Modeling reports as well as documented Mathematica les, which can be used to execute the models and obtain graphical output from them. TEFA-2 is a simple system (although it draws upon the sophisticated theory underlying Structured Modeling) and only a prototype. Yet, we believe, it and systems like it can go far to ameliorate the kinds of problems that provoked the GAO report.

متن کاملThe Coast Guard's KSS Project
Since June 1986, the University of Pennsylvania has been under contract with the Coast Guard to provide support for the Coast Guard's KSS (knowledge-based decision support systems) project. A principal output of the KSS project has been Max, a DSS shell or environment, originally designed to support modeling tasks during decision making for ship acquisition. Max is innovative in a number of way...
متن کاملA Sound Symbolic Study of Translation of Onomatopoeia in Children's Literature: The Case of '' Tintin''
As onomatopoeic words or expressions are attractive, the users of languages in the fields of religion, literature, music, education, linguistics, trade, and so forth wish to utilize them in their utterances. They are more effective and imaginative than the simple words. Onomatopoeic words or expressions attach us to the real nature and to our inner senses. This study aims at familiarity with on...
متن کاملModeling of Hydrodynamic Factors for Management of Coastal Hazards, Case Study: Khamir Port, Persian Gulf, Iran
In coastal areas, hydrodynamic factors make changes in shorelines geomorphology. This can affect coastal facilities and cause hazards to human societies in the areas. This study has investigated the influence of wave and tide properties on Khamir Port, Hormoz Strait in coast of Persian Gulf. The purpose of the study is to make a mathematical regional and local modeling of water level fluctuatio...
متن کاملGreen Supply Chain Risk Network Management and Performance Analysis: Bayesian Belief Network Modeling
With the increase in environmental awareness, competitions and government policies, implementation of green supply chain management activities to sustain production and conserve resources is becoming more necessary for different organizations. However, it is difficult to successfully implement green supply chain (GSC) activities because of the risks involved. These risks alongside their resourc...
